If your single lever kitchen tap is dripping, leaking or difficult to operate, the cartridge inside the tap may need replacing.
The cartridge controls both the water flow and the temperature. Replacing it can often fix the problem without having to replace the whole tap.
Before You Start
- Turn off both the hot and cold water supplies to the tap.
- Open the tap to let any water left the pipes out.
- Make sure you have the correct replacement cartridge before starting.
- Have a screwdriver, allen key and adjustable spanner available.
Removing the Old Cartridge
1. Remove the tap handle
Look for a small grub screw underneath or at the back of the handle. On some taps, the screw is hidden behind the small hot/cold indicator. Once the screw is removed, the handle should lift or pull away from the tap.
2. Remove the decorative cover or shroud
With the handle removed, you may see a decorative cover or shroud around the cartridge. If your tap has one, carefully unscrew or remove it.
3. Remove the cartridge retaining nut
Under the cover you should see the cartridge retaining nut. This is the large nut that holds the cartridge securely inside the tap. Carefully loosen and remove it using an adjustable spanner.
4. Remove the old cartridge
Pull the old cartridge out of the tap body. If it is stuck, gently move it from side to side to loosen it. Do not force it, as you could damage the tap.
Important: Before removing the cartridge, take a photo of it in position. Make a note of which way it is facing. The new cartridge needs to be fitted in the same orientation.
Fitting the New Cartridge
1. Clean the tap body
Before fitting the new cartridge, clean away any dirt, limescale or debris from inside the tap body.
2. Fit the new cartridge
Place the new cartridge into the tap in the same position and direction as the original.
Make sure the locating pins on the bottom of the cartridge line up with the corresponding holes in the tap body. These pins stop the cartridge from turning and ensure it sits correctly.
3. Refit the retaining nut
Replace the cartridge retaining nut and tighten it securely. Do not overtighten.
4. Refit the shroud and handle
Replace the decorative shroud, then refit the tap handle and tighten the grub screw.
5. Turn the water back on
Slowly turn the hot and cold water supplies back on. Operate the tap and check carefully for any leaks.
Important – Check Your Cartridge Before Ordering
Single lever cartridges are not universal. They come in different diameters, heights, base designs, locating pins and spline arrangements.
Two cartridges can look very similar but still be completely different and may not fit your tap.
