How to change a Cartridge in a Single Lever Tap

Before You Start

  • Turn off both hot and cold water supplies.
  • Open the tap to release any remaining water.
  • Make sure you have the correct replacement cartridge.
  • Have a screwdriver, allen key and adjustable spanner ready.

Removing the Old Cartridge

1. Remove the handle
Loosen the grub screw underneath or behind the handle. If hidden, check behind the hot/cold indicator. Lift or pull the handle away.

2. Remove the cover/shroud
Unscrew and remove the decorative cover around the cartridge, if fitted.

3. Remove the retaining nut
Use an adjustable spanner to carefully loosen and remove the large retaining nut.

4. Remove the cartridge
Pull the cartridge from the tap. If stuck, gently move it from side to side. Do not force it.

Important: Before removing the cartridge take note of it's orientation and position in the tap body. The new cartridge must be fitted in the same way.

Fitting the New Cartridge

1. Clean the tap body
Remove any dirt, limescale or debris from inside the tap.

2. Fit the new cartridge
Insert it in the same position and direction as the original. Ensure the locating pins line up with the holes in the tap body.

3. Refit the retaining nut
Tighten securely, but do not overtighten.

4. Refit the shroud and handle
Replace the shroud, handle and grub screw.

5. Turn the water back on
Slowly restore the hot and cold water supplies. Operate the tap and check carefully for leaks.

Important – Check Your Cartridge Before Ordering

Single lever cartridges are not universal and vary in diameter, height, base design and locating pins.

Before ordering, compare your cartridge with the measurements, photos and specifications on our product page.
